A cryotherapy session at a sports centre in Paris ended in tragedy on Monday evening after a nitrogen leak reportedly caused the death of a gym employee and left a client critically ill. The incident occurred in the 11th district of the French capital and has triggered a police investigation into the cause of death. Initial findings indicate that a leak from the cryochamber released nitrogen gas, leading to poisoning. The deceased, an employee in her late 20s, was reportedly inside the cold chamber at the time. A client, believed to be in her 30s, was also affected and remains hospitalised in critical condition. Authorities stated that three others who were in close contact with the victims and administered first aid required treatment. Around 150 people were present in the gym during the incident and were evacuated shortly after emergency services arrived. Journalists from AFP on the scene reported seeing a body covered in a white sheet being carried from the premises, while large screens were erected to shield the scene from public view. Cryotherapy involves exposing individuals to extremely low temperaturesoften below 100Cfor short durations, typically no longer than three minutes. Proponents claim it helps reduce muscle soreness, alleviate stress, and treat certain skin conditions. Despite its growing popularity among athletes and celebrities, medical experts continue to question the treatments safety and efficacy. Nitrogen, used in cryotherapy to rapidly cool the chamber, is a colourless and odourless gas. While commonly applied in medical and industrial settings, it poses severe health risks when inhaled in enclosed spaces. This is not the first time cryotherapy has come under scrutiny. In 2015, a similar tragedy occurred in Las Vegas when a 24-year-old woman died after becoming trapped in a cold chamber after hours. The Paris public prosecutors office has confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the latest incident.
