All three senators representing Kebbi State on Tuesday, May 13, formally announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, marking a significant shift in the upper chambers political alignment. The defectors; Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), are the latest in a series of PDP lawmakers to cross over to the APC amid growing internal tensions within the opposition party. Their defection increases the APCs strength in the 10th Senate to 68 members, while the PDPs representation has dropped from 33 to 30. The Labour Party (LP) currently holds five seats, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has two, and both the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have one senator each. Two Senate seats remain vacant: one due to the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South, and the other following the swearing-in of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the new Governor of Edo State, vacating his Edo Central seat. The defections come amid increased political realignments and jockeying ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the APC consolidating its majority and the PDP grappling with a wave of desertions from its ranks.
