A father and daughter have died in Chiang Rai, Thailand, after consuming a Thai curry made with wild mushrooms that proved to be poisonous. Boonpan, 78, and his daughter Wijitra, 40, ate the meal on August 22 after receiving the mushrooms as a gift from a friend. Boonpan began foaming at the mouth and convulsing shortly after finishing his portion. Relatives rushed to Wijitras locked bedroom and found her unconscious. Both were taken to hospital but were later pronounced dead. Thatsanee, 49, Wijitras elder sister, said the mushrooms were unfamiliar to the family. My sister had never cooked with this type of mushroom before because she didnt usually like mushrooms. This was the first time, she said. She added that while the mushrooms had been shared with other relatives, they had not yet eaten them. The family described the horror of watching Boonpan convulse violently and emphasized the difficulty of identifying poisonous mushrooms. I love mushrooms, but after what happened, I will never touch them again. Its difficult to tell which ones are poisonous, Thatsanee said. A sample of the mushrooms has been sent to a local hospital for analysis. The tragedy comes amid other cases worldwide, including Australia, where Erin Patterson was found guilty of poisoning her in-laws with death cap mushrooms earlier this year. Authorities continue to urge caution when handling or consuming wild fungi, highlighting that even experienced cooks can be at risk when using unfamiliar ingredients.
