There was mild drama at the Customary Court in Oke-Eda, Akure on Thursday, as a lingering property dispute between estranged lovers, Mrs. Mary Afolabi and her ex-husband, Mr. Afolabi Olufemi, took a fresh turn ending with a firm order that Mary must return a deep freezer she claimed to have sold. The case, which first came up on August 13, 2025, at about 8 a.m., has since kept court officials entertained with accusations and emotional outbursts from both sides. Although the marriage between the duo had long been dissolved, the battle over who owns what, in the former matrimonial home refused to d!e. At the resumed hearing on November 6, 2025, at exactly 11 a.m., Mary shocked the court when she announced that the deep freezer Olufemi was dragging with her was no longer in existence. According to her, hardship pushed her to sell the freezer. I used it to feed myself and the children when he stopped taking care of us, she told the court, attracting murmurs from the audience. But the ex-husband fired back almost immediately, denying every accusation. It is a lie, my lord! I have never abandoned my responsibilities, Olufemi insisted, accusing Mary of twisting the facts just to hold on to his property. He maintained that the freezer was his personal belonging and urged the court to compel Mary to return it at all cost. When asked by the court about the current market value of the appliance, Mary admitted that a similar deep freezer now sells for between N80,000 and N90,000. Asked when she intended to refund the value, she casually proposed November 2026, a date that visibly displeased the court. Delivering her ruling, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Temitope Falana, dismissed the proposed timeline and ordered Mary to return the deep freezer or pay its full value on or before March 31, 2026. The matter was adjourned to the same date for compliance.
