Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has granted a state pardon to Sunday Jackson, the farmer who was sentenced to death for killing a herder during a confrontation on his farm. The pardon was announced on Tuesday and immediately sparked celebrations across Yola, with residents taking to the streets in jubilation. According to the governors spokesperson, Humwashi Wonosikou, Jacksonwho was awaiting execution at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abujawas pardoned alongside two other inmates. The decision was taken as part of the states Christmas and New Year clemency. Governor Fintiri also approved the remission of remaining jail terms for five other inmates, citing good conduct and noticeable behavioural improvement, based on recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. Jacksons case had drawn intense public debate after reports revealed he was injured while trying to chase herders off his farmland and later overpowered one of them during a struggle that led to the herders death. The Supreme Court upheld his death sentence earlier this year, a ruling that triggered nationwide and international criticism. In November 2025, a US congressman, Riley Moore, publicly urged the Nigerian government to pardon Jackson, describing the incident as self-defence and questioning the fairness of imposing the death penalty under such circumstances. The case was later referenced during discussions in the US Congress on Nigerias human rights record.
