A prison officer who engaged in an illicit relationship with an inmate, including what prosecutors described as extremely graphic phone s3x and the exchange of explicit letters, has been jailed for misconduct. Megann Gibson, 26, formed the relationship with inmate Ryan Horan while working at HM Prison Wealstun, a Category C jail in West Yorkshire. The court heard she allowed Horan access to restricted areas, visited him at his resettlement accommodation and kept in touch through his mother, to whom she sent more than nine hundred messages. Gibson was sentenced to twelve months in prison after pleading guilty to misconduct in a public office and possession of cannabis. Leeds Crown Court was told her behaviour raised one hundred and two anti corruption intelligence reports in just five months, almost one for every working day. Horan, described in court as a hardened member of an organised crime gang, was serving an imprisonment for public protection sentence. Prosecutor Louise Pryke told the court: The conversations were of a highly s3xual nature and extremely graphic. Some of the calls lasted up to an hour. During the calls, they expressed their love for each other, discussed getting married, having children and life after Ryan Horan got out of prison. Police later found letters from Horan in Gibsons bedroom, along with one thousand pounds in cash she could not account for. She told officers it was intended for a tattoo, but financial checks showed no such withdrawal had been made. Investigators also recovered explicit letters in which Horan thanked her for a vape and praised her kissing. The court heard Gibson was suspected of further inappropriate contact with men linked to organised crime, including Michael Holt, believed to be involved in smuggling cannabis vapes into the prison. His brother Shaun Holt was incarcerated at Wealstun during Gibsons employment. Intelligence also suggested improper behaviour with two other inmates: armed robbers Sery Tokro and Wayne Coleman. Sentencing her, Judge Kate Rayfield said: Almost immediately, intelligence reports were being filed about your conduct at work, and in just five short months, 102 corruption reports were logged. They included concerns that you were attempting to bring in contraband into the prison, and also becoming over familiar with some prisoners, spending too much time in their cells with them when you were supposed to be on active duty. Despite this repeated disciplinary action, you embarked upon a relationship with prisoner Ryan Horan. The case comes just a day after another prison officer, Rebecca Pinckard, pleaded guilty to performing a s3x act on an inmate while working at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk.
