Tragedy struck in Apete Community, Ibadan, Oyo State, when two teenagers, Abdullahi Sheriff and Adekitan Rasheed, drowned in a river flowing through the Morubo-Apete area. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, December 21, 2025 when the teenagers went for swimming. Sheriff, aged 15, and Rasheed, 13 years old, were said to be relatives, with their parents houses built side-by-side at Apete. According to Nigerian Tribune report published on Wednesday, the two boys had frequented the river to bathe, but were always chased out by elderly people who used to point at the danger of swimming in a river whose depth is unknown. The duo was said to have also been engaged in fishing at the river. On the fateful day, the two teenagers reportedly snuck out of their houses, pulled off their clothes, put them on plant branches by the riverside, and dived into the river to swim. The family members, who did not see them at home, went to the riverside and saw their clothes hanging on the branches. They were said to have requested help that night, but the efforts were unsuccessful, causing them to report the missing children at the Apete Police station on Monday. A resident said that police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), swiftly moved to the riverside with two experienced swimmers who brought out the bodies of the teenagers from the depths of the river. It was learnt that one of the deceased teenagers was buried by the riverside by his family members, who decided to adhere to the custom belief, while the second one was taken to a cemetery and buried according to Islamic rites.
