Tragedy has struck the Shanga Local Government Area in Kebbi State, as a group of armed gunmen launched a surprise attack on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community. According to eyewitnesses, the ambush occurred while security operatives, including soldiers, were responding to intelligence about suspected armed groups in the area.
Details of the attack are still emerging, but it's believed that the security personnel were targeted along the way, resulting in the loss of an unspecified number of lives, including at least two civilians. The incident also saw two military trucks set ablaze, leaving the community in a state of shock and chaos.
Nasir Idris, the Governor of Kebbi State, has spoken out against the attack, condemning it as "sad" and "barbaric." He visited victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where he pledged support for those affected, including covering medical bills for the injured and assisting the families of fallen security personnel. The Governor reaffirmed the state government's commitment to strengthening security across Kebbi State and protecting the lives of its citizens.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks across northern Nigeria, where armed groups have been targeting communities and security forces. A similar clash in Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State, in 2025 resulted in the deaths of 17 soldiers, while repeated ambushes in Borno State have been linked to insurgent groups.
