Teenage sensation Max Dowman has been making waves in the football world, becoming the youngest Premier League goalscorer at the tender age of 16. However, Arsenal legend Theo Walcott is cautioning against rushing Dowman into the international scene, and even hopes he won't be selected for the upcoming World Cup squad.
Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Arsenal, hasn't ruled out picking Dowman for the World Cup, praising the youngster's growth in a "fantastic environment." But Walcott, who was just 17 when he was selected for the 2006 World Cup, is urging caution. Drawing from his own experience, Walcott admitted that he wishes he had taken a more measured approach to his international career. "If I could go back in time, I would change things," he said. "I would tell myself, no, no, don't do it."
Walcott believes that Dowman needs time to mature, both on and off the pitch. "He needs to grow at his own pace, especially on the emotional side because he's a young adult," he explained. The former Arsenal forward also praised the club's approach to managing Dowman, noting that he's being "protected," which is essential for a young player like him.
