Tragedy struck on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos State when a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker plowed into a dispatch rider, causing instant death. The devastating crash occurred on March 25, 2026, under the Cele Bridge corridor.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the dispatch rider was struck by the speeding tanker and tragically died on impact. The driver of the tanker, however, fled the scene, leaving behind the unfortunate victim and the mangled motorcycle.
LASTMA officials sprang into action, swiftly cordoning off the crash site with cautionary measures to prevent secondary collisions and protect other commuters on the busy expressway. The offending tanker was subsequently impounded, while the police took over the investigation, handing over the deceased rider, the impounded tanker, and the damaged motorcycle for thorough examination and prosecution.
The remains of the deceased were professionally secured from underneath the tanker and taken to a morgue in Yaba for post-mortem examination. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, led the response efforts, ensuring that necessary procedures were followed to bring the perpetrator to justice.
