Wildlife enthusiasts are in for a shock as photos and videos emerge of squirrels in various cities, including London and Philadelphia, caught vaping on automated smoking devices. One particularly eye-catching video shows a squirrel perched on a fence in Brixton, South London, clutching an e-cigarette between its paws and seemingly enjoying the experience. On the other side of the Atlantic, a TikTok user captured a similar sighting in Philadelphia, where a squirrel was spotted with what appears to be an Elfbar electronic cigarette.

According to experts, these squirrels aren't necessarily drawn to the nicotine itself, but rather the enticing fruity smells that vaping devices emit. Dr. Craig Shuttleworth, a renowned red squirrel expert from Bangor University in Wales, comments on the alarming trend, saying, "In the old days, we'd see discarded cigarette butts, but I don't recall squirrels carrying them around. It's reasonable to assume that a vape would be more attractive than a normal tobacco product, especially when it comes to fruity scents."

While the appeal of vaping devices to squirrels may seem amusing, the potential consequences are far from trivial. Dr. Shuttleworth warns that these animals could inadvertently ingest microplastics by gnawing on the vaping devices, as well as nicotine, which is a chemical they're not exposed to in the wild.
