Rifts within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have been brewing for months, but now the party is accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of taking a deliberate step to prevent them from participating in the 2027 general election. According to Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's National Publicity Secretary, INEC's recent actions, including refusing to accept their correspondence, could be a ploy to hinder the ADC's ability to meet key electoral requirements.
At the heart of the issue is a leadership crisis that has been ongoing since July 2025, when an opposition coalition took control of the party's structure. Former deputy national chairman Nafiu Bala challenged the emergence of former Senate President David Mark as national chairman, leading to a deepening dispute. Despite the controversy, INEC had initially recognized both leadership groups. However, after a Court of Appeal judgment, the commission announced that it would no longer acknowledge either group, citing the need to await the outcome of a case before the Federal High Court.
Bolaji Abdullahi is now questioning INEC's motives, arguing that their current stance contradicts their earlier actions. He points out that INEC had deployed officials to monitor a key party meeting in July 2025 and had even uploaded the names of the new leadership.
