Cameroon's President Paul Biya has taken a significant step in shaping the country's future by appointing his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, to a powerful new role. As revealed in an official decree issued on April 4, 2026, Franck Biya has been named Vice President of the Republic and Head of the Armed Forces. The document also designates him as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, placing him at the very heart of Cameroon's security apparatus.
According to the decree, Franck Biya's appointments are in line with constitutional provisions and defence laws. The presidency emphasized that the appointments were made in accordance with service requirements and will be registered, published, and inserted in the Official Gazette without delay. This move comes just a few months after President Biya, aged 92, took office for an unprecedented eighth term following a highly contested election last year.
The election saw President Biya secure a slim majority of 54 percent of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who polled 35 percent. However, Tchiroma Bakary has disputed the outcome, claiming electoral fraud and insisting that he was the rightful winner. Despite this, the Constitutional Council rejected multiple petitions challenging the results, citing insufficient evidence.
In a response to the election controversy, President Biya praised the electoral body for its conduct and congratulated security forces for containing the demonstrations. However, he did not address allegations of excessive force used by the authorities.
