In a disturbing case that has raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals, a female support worker has been struck off the professional care worker register after being accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior with a 15-year-old schoolboy. Chloe Short, 28, from Caerphilly, Wales, was employed to provide respite care to the teenager and his family through an organization that supports families and children.
According to the findings of a fitness to practice panel, Short behaved in a "wholly inappropriate manner" by sharing a bed with the minor and sending him explicit photos of herself. One of the images showed her in a towel after getting out of the shower, while another depicted the pair lying in bed together, with the boy's top off. The panel was also told that Short had sent a series of messages to the boy, expressing her affection and obsession with him.
This is not the first time Short has been accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior with a minor. She was previously handed a ten-month suspended prison sentence after admitting to sexual activity with a child. At the time, a judge described her behavior as "very inappropriate" and expressed concern that she had breached the trust placed in her as a support worker.
The fact that Short was able to carry out this behavior while working with a vulnerable teenager is especially disturbing. As a support worker, she was entrusted with the responsibility of providing care and guidance to the boy and his family. Instead, she exploited her position of trust to engage in behavior that is unacceptable and potentially harmful.
The standards hearing that led to Short's striking off from the professional care worker register was told that her behavior was so serious that there would always be a risk of her working with vulnerable people again. Committee chair Steve Jones made it clear that the panel had no alternative but to strike her off the register.
