A young girl's bravery has led to the arrest of a suspect in Ondo state. Emmanuel Usman, a 23-year-old man, has been taken into custody by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Ijebu-Owo in the Owo Local Government Area. According to DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the police command's spokesperson, the victim reported the incident on March 29, alleging that Usman had forcefully dragged her into his employers' office and committed a heinous crime without her consent.
The victim, who showed remarkable courage, revealed that Usman had threatened her to keep quiet about the incident, intending to intimidate and silence her. However, she refused to back down and instead reported the matter to the police. This led to swift action, with operatives from the Gender-Based Violence Unit moving in to arrest the suspect. Usman, who is currently in custody, has made a statement to aid the investigation.
The police spokesperson, DSP Jimoh, assured that the suspect will be charged in court once the investigation is concluded. In the meantime, the victim has received medical care at the General Hospital, Owo, and additional support mechanisms are being explored to ensure her well-being throughout the process. The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has directed the police to handle the case with utmost diligence, sensitivity, and urgency, reaffirming the command's commitment to combating all forms of sexual and gender-based violence
