A recent incident at O.R. Tambo International Airport has left three Nigerian nationals facing deportation from South Africa. The reason behind the move? Social media posts that allegedly insulted the country's government. On April 5, 2026, the travelers, who included a well-known media personality named Yemi, were denied entry despite holding valid visas and travel documents.
According to Yemi, he and his companions were unlawfully detained, with officials seizing one of their phones and refusing their request for an immediate return flight. Feeling unsafe, Yemi called for their prompt repatriation. The South African immigration authorities confirmed the deportation in a statement, explaining that the travelers' online posts about the government had placed them on a watchlist.
The statement highlighted the travelers' inability to adequately explain or substantiate their statements during processing, which further complicated the situation.
