A Remarkable Story of Courage in the Face of Adversity
Njoku Nnena, a 22-year-old young woman from Nigeria, has been living a nightmare that she will never forget. Trafficked to Mali for prostitution, Nnena's journey was a desperate attempt to provide for her three-year-old son and elderly mother back home. Economic hardship and family responsibilities pushed her to seek opportunities beyond her home state, but little did she know that she was walking into a trap.
In an interview, Nnena shared her story, revealing how she was lured into the clutches of human traffickers in Lagos. She was introduced to a woman under a bridge, who arranged for her to travel to Mali. From Cotonou in the Benin Republic, Nnena was transported to Mali, where she was handed over to another member of the trafficking network. Her ordeal was a cruel twist of fate, as she was forced into prostitution and coerced into sending money to her captors, despite not fully understanding the terms.
Nnena's physical challenges made her situation even more dire. Suffering from epilepsy due to a childhood stroke, she ran out of medication during the journey, which exacerbated her condition. "I didn't have my drugs with me, and my condition became worse. I couldn't continue what they asked me to do," she said, recalling the darkest moments of her ordeal.
