Court sentences man to 15 strokes of cane for stealing phones in Kaduna church

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates' Court on Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Kingsley Timothy to 15 strokes of cane for stealing two phones worth N650,000 in church.  The convict, a resident of Narayi, Kaduna State, was charged with theft, to which he pleaded guilty and pleaded for leniency.  The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced the convict to 15 strokes of cane and advised him to be of good behaviour.  Emmanuel also warned him to desist from committing crimes as the court would not be lenient with him next time. Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that one Richard Samuel of Christ Life Ministry, Kaduna, reported the matter at the Narayi Police Station on November 15. Leo said the convict stole a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and an Infinix phone, all valued at 650,000, belonging to the complainant while he was charging them in the church.  The prosecutor said the convict was caught after the theft and handed over to the police.  He said the offence contravened Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
