Tribalism is a very potent tool used by politicians - Yoruba man says as he shares his experience after bashing an Igbo man’s car in South-East

A Yoruba man has shared a personal experience illustrating how tribalism shapes social interactions in Nigeria, recounting an incident where he accidentally bashed an Igbo mans car while traveling in the South-East. According to him, he was clearly at fault in the accident, but witnesses who gathered at the scene pleaded with the Igbo car owner to forgive him and let him go without paying for the damages. He explained that once the bystanders learned he was Yoruba, their pleas became even more fervent, insisting that he should be released without consequences. He added that not a single person encouraged the Igbo driver to take action against him, suggesting that the encounter reflected the deep social and emotional bonds among Nigerians, even as politicians often exploit such sentiments for division. Concluding his story, he remarked that the incident reminded him how tribalism is a very potent tool used by politicians, stressing that while ordinary citizens often coexist peacefully, political leaders tend to manipulate ethnic identity for personal gain.Watch the video below..
