Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after successfully representing President Bola Tinubu at two major international summits: the Group of 20 (G20) Leaders Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the 7th African UnionEuropean Union (AU-EU) Summit in Luanda, Angola. The Vice President departed South Africa on Sunday for Luanda, concluding a successful outing at the G20 where he represented the President.In Angola, Senator Shettima delivered President Tinubus key statement, using the platform to intensify Nigerias call for Africa to secure permanent seats with veto-wielding authority on the United Nations (UN) Security Council. The statement insisted that a comprehensive reform of the global governance system is long overdue to reflect current world complexities. The Nigerian leader also addressed the European Union (EU), tasking it with co-creating peace and security initiatives alongside its African partners. He emphasized that these initiatives must be anchored on African-led frameworks as the only pathway to achieving sustainable stability across the continent. The Nigerian government, through the Vice President, reaffirmed its firm commitment to advancing peace, security, and democratic governance across Africa and collaborating with the European Union to build a more stable, just, and prosperous world.During his engagement at the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, President Tinubu urged world leaders to develop a more equitable and responsive system for managing global financial flows and to sincerely address the recurring debt crises in a manner that serves the needs of all nations. In his speech at the first session on Saturday, the President noted that the current multilateral frameworks are outdated and built in an era far removed from the present challenges, arguing they no longer reflect the complexities of the modern world.At the third session of the G20 Leaders Summit on Sunday, the President made two distinct calls.He called for a global framework that benefits the communities hosting critical minerals in Nigeria and across Africa, ensuring value addition at the source rather than just extraction. He backed the creation of global ethical standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI), aimed at accelerating development across the world while mitigating risks.
