A Danish grandmother has been handed a suspended prison sentence for posting photos of her grandson's birth on social media after her daughter reported her to the police. The images, which appeared on Facebook in November, showed not only the newborn baby but also the mother during labour. They resurfaced several years after the birth, by which time the child was already in first grade. The mother was stunned to see the photos, captioned 'My first grandchild', and never expected the personal images to be shared beyond the delivery room. According to Danish broadcaster TV 2, the grandmother, 50, had filmed and photographed the birth while present in the delivery suite. Four pictures were later posted online without her daughter's consent, showing her abdomen during the actual birth and the baby immediately afterwards. Disturbed by the move, the new mother demanded the images be removed, a request that was eventually carried out. But when the grandmother was informed that the charges would lead to criminal proceedings, she posted the same photos on Facebook again. Her daughter also filed a formal complaint with the police over the violation of her privacy. The case went before the Odense District Court on the island of Funen, though the grandmother did not attend the hearing. She was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, suspended, meaning she will not serve jail time unless she reoffends. She was also ordered to pay her daughter 10,000 kroner (around 1,150/ 1,200) in damages for the ordeal.
