Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed confidence that the issue surrounding the conviction and potential release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will be resolved through an administrative process. The Governor gave this assurance following a recent visit to the IPOB leader at the Sokoto Correctional Centre over the weekend. He stated that engagements towards securing Kanu's freedom, which he initiated shortly after taking office in 2023, have been intensified.In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti reported having fruitful discussions with Kanu during the visit. Governor Otti encouraged Mazi Kanu to remain strong, letting him know that the ongoing, long-term engagements were being intensified. "The Governor enjoined Kanu to remain calm but strong, assuring that the issue will be resolved administratively and that he, Mazi Kanu, will regain his freedom," the statement read.Governor Otti expressed joy that the Sultan of Sokoto is supportive of the need for Kanu's freedom and the de-escalation of tension. According to the Governor, the Sultan had even joked that Kanu was now his subject and that he was going to turban him, a remark that reportedly got the IPOB leader laughing loudly.Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, described as being in high spirits and beaming with smiles, expressed his appreciation for the Governors show of solidarity and continued concern, noting that he wasn't surprised by the Governor's visit, as he had visited in the past. Kanu also took the opportunity to commend Governor Otti for the developmental strides achieved in Abia State since he assumed office. He likened the Governor's achievements to the lasting legacy of the late Dee Sam Mbakwe of the Old Imo State. Kanu told the Governor that he is only interested in good governance and anything that could better the lot of the people, urging the Governor to continue to serve the people diligently.Governor Otti was accompanied on the visit by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. Some top Sokoto State Government officials and Kanu's younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, were also present.
