Colbert had been riffing on the idea of running into a prince during an ordinary workday and the premise of overly sentimental Christmas films. Harry joined in, saying he wanted a role in such movies because Americans are, in his words, obsessed with Christmas stories and with royalty. Colbert disagreed, saying Americans were not fixated on monarchy, prompting Harry to respond, Really? I heard you elected a king. The remark drew audible gasps and scattered boos from the audience before Colbert stepped in to support the joke.
The exchange came months after Trump referred to himself as a king in a Truth Social post about New York City congestion pricing, a comment that sparked nationwide No Kings protests. Harry kept the bit going, saying he was willing to do whatever it took to land a Hallmark style role. Colbert replied that he had never done any of those things, prompting Harry to shoot back, Maybe thats why youre canceled, a nod to CBS sixteen million dollar settlement with Trump, which Colbert sharply criticized before his show was taken off air. CBS has maintained the cancellation was for financial reasons. The White House was contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
