Maiduguri is on high alert after a series of explosions left over 100 people injured and at least 23 dead. Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that two suspected suicide bombers are still at large, despite intelligence reports indicating that five attackers had infiltrated the city. In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, the governor revealed that three of the bombers have already detonated their improvised explosive devices, while efforts are underway to track down the remaining two.
The coordinated nature of the blasts has raised concerns about renewed insurgent activity in the region. Authorities believe that the attacks are linked to the ongoing military operations in Sambisa Forest and around Lake Chad, where insurgents often disperse into civilian areas to evade pressure from security forces. Governor Zulum emphasized the challenges posed by Maiduguri's growing population, estimated at between three and four million, which makes it difficult to effectively screen individuals entering the city.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and are actively tracking the suspects, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid crowded areas, particularly during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. Governor Zulum reassured residents that security has improved compared to previous years and that additional measures have been put in place to prevent further attacks. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and provide any information that could help locate the remaining two bombers. "We are on top of the situation, and we will find the two who are yet to detonate their devices," he said.
