NBA President Speaks Out Against Courtroom Behavior
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has recently issued a statement addressing a concerning incident that took place in a Federal High Court in Abuja on March 24. According to reports, human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore clashed with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who asked him to take his press conference outside. The advocate argued that the courtroom was a place of respect, not a stage for performance. Sowore claimed that there was no law preventing him from speaking to the press inside the courtroom.
NBA President Afam Osigwe has weighed in on the matter, expressing grave concern over the incident. In a statement, he emphasized that courtrooms are sacred spaces dedicated to the administration of justice, not arenas for public performances or confrontations. He reminded everyone that the openness of courtrooms is what promotes transparency and public confidence in the justice system, but it also comes with a responsibility to maintain decorum and respect for the judicial process. According to Osigwe, any behavior that undermines the dignity of the court constitutes a serious threat to the rule of law.
The NBA President made it clear that using a courtroom as a platform for publicity or advocacy is unacceptable. He urged everyone involved in the justice system to exercise restraint and respect for the sanctity of the courtroom.
