New York City lawyer Bryan McKenna was sentenced to up to six years in prison for his role in embezzling $4.4 million in COVID-19 funds. McKenna, a 62-year-old real estate attorney, broke down in tears as he addressed the Manhattan Supreme Court judge, expressing deep regret for his actions. In a poignant moment, McKenna admitted, "I just am ashamed of myself. I tried to lead a good life," as he struggled to hold back tears.
According to McKenna's defense lawyer, Eric Franz, the attorney was driven by desperation to help his family, including a son struggling with mental health issues. Franz argued that McKenna's focus was on securing medical appointments and funding for his son's treatment, rather than prioritizing his own personal needs. However, prosecutors disputed this claim, alleging that McKenna used the stolen funds to indulge in a lavish romance with his then-girlfriend, Duni Zenaye, the CEO of AstZen Group.
The scandal unraveled when Elkay Plastics, a packaging manufacturer, placed $4.45 million into an escrow account managed by McKenna to purchase medical-grade latex gloves for PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. By April 2021, McKenna had drained the account dry, using the funds to fuel his personal relationship with Zenaye. Despite being given the opportunity to return the funds in the summer of 2021, McKenna chose to continue his illicit activities.
