In a shocking turn of events, a 24-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years and six months for murdering a 56-year-old mother of two, Nila Patel. The attack occurred on June 24 last year after Ahanonu's car flipped over near Leicester Royal Infirmary, and he punched, kicked, and stamped on Ms Patel with full force, causing her to die two days later from brain damage.

Ahanonu, a former university student, had initially denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter, citing diminished responsibility. However, after a month-long trial, a jury at Leicester Crown Court found him guilty of murder on March 23, 2026. During sentencing, Judge Timothy Spencer KC delivered a stern verdict, stating that Ahanonu's actions were "shocking, brutal, and merciless." The judge further emphasized that Ahanonu had deliberately targeted Ms Patel due to her gender, build, and height, as well as her race. In an unguarded moment, Ahanonu had referred to "dirty Asians."
