Tensions between Moscow and Kiev are reaching new heights as Ukraine unleashes a massive 400-drone assault on a crucial Russian port. The attack, which targeted the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, set off a massive fire and brought the port's operations to a standstill. Ust-Luga serves as a key hub for the export of oil, fertilizers, and coal, making it a vital economic target for Ukraine.
According to Russia's defence ministry, its air defences successfully intercepted and destroyed 389 drones in the process, with the remaining handful of drones striking targets in border regions and around Moscow. Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed that the fire at Ust-Luga was being brought under control, with no casualties reported so far. Ukraine's military took credit for the attack, stating that the oil loading and unloading infrastructure at the port had been hit.
This brazen assault follows a similar attack earlier in the week on the Baltic port of Primorsk, which also resulted in a massive fire. The escalation comes in response to Russia's own aggressive drone campaign, which saw nearly 1,000 drones launched at Ukraine within 24 hours, killing at least eight people and hitting cities like Lviv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, calling them "absolute depravity" and vowing retaliation.
