Tragedy Strikes Historic UK Landmark
A devastating fire has ravaged the historic Big Mill in Leek, Staffordshire, leaving behind a trail of destruction and raising concerns for the safety of emergency responders. The six-story Grade II-listed building, which dates back to 1857, was once home to a major silk manufacturing firm that employed thousands of workers. However, at the time of the blaze, the building had been unoccupied and was awaiting redevelopment into residential flats.
The fire broke out at around 9:22pm, prompting emergency services to spring into action. Despite the efforts of multiple crews and an aerial ladder platform, the blaze spread rapidly through the structure, forcing a large cordon to be put in place. Roads around the area, including the A523 Mill Street, were closed as authorities urged the public to stay away from the scene.
"It's under control, but we're unable to enter the building at this time," said Station Manager Jonathan Ashby of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. "The large cordon will remain in place for some time as we work to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion."
Drone footage captured the heart-wrenching moment when flames engulfed the building, with parts of the structure collapsing as firefighters battled the inferno. Witnesses described the scene as "frightening," with one person saying they were left "shaking like a leaf" after coming across the fire.
