A dramatic arrival in more ways than one, a Caribbean Airlines passenger welcomed a baby boy on Saturday, April 5, just moments before the plane touched down at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport. As Flight 005 made its final approach to JFK around noon, the mother-to-be suddenly went into labor. With medical personnel waiting at the gate, the plane was given the green light for a direct approach. The air traffic controller on duty even got in on the action, playfully suggesting the baby be named Kennedy in a nod to the airport's namesake.
In a tense and yet somehow calm exchange, the pilot clarified the situation for the controller, who had initially thought there was a sick passenger on board instead of a pregnant one in labor. "We have a passenger, a pregnant passenger, who's going into labor at this time," the pilot explained. With that, the plane descended safely to the ground, and the baby was born on board.
As it turns out, this little arrival wasn't a first for flights landing at JFK. Back in January 2015, a mother-to-be on a Royal Jordanian flight gave birth to a baby boy while a doctor and nurse on board helped with the delivery. The flight landed just over two hours after the birth, and both mom and baby were taken to Jamaica Hospital in Queens in good health.
