Tragedy struck in Abuja on Friday, April 3, when a two-storey building under construction suddenly gave way, leaving a trail of destruction and injuries. The incident occurred in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, at approximately 11:00am, catching construction workers off guard. Fortunately, the authorities sprang into action quickly to ensure the safety of those involved. According to Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), rescue operations were launched immediately to prevent any further harm.
The FEMD's Search and Rescue Team reported that 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed. Miraculously, five of the workers sustained injuries, while a male worker trapped at the ground level was successfully rescued. All the injured workers, including the rescued victim, were rushed to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are receiving treatment and responding well.
Emergency responders from various agencies, including FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command, were deployed to the scene to provide assistance. The FEMD also noted that excavation at the site was ongoing to ensure that no one remained trapped.
