Covenant University Student Loses Life Due to Medical Emergency on Campus
An incident occurred on the Covenant University campus in Ota, Ogun State, resulting in the loss of a student's life. Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level Building Technology student, passed away in the school clinic after being rushed from the football field due to a breathing problem. Emmanuel had been participating in the Chancellors Cup tournament when he complained of leg pains and fatigue, stepped out of the match, and was later found struggling to breathe.
Fellow students quickly responded by rushing him to the school medical center. According to the university's statement, doctors administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED), but unfortunately, all efforts to revive Emmanuel were unsuccessful.
The university's management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Timothy A. Anake, denied claims of negligence or lack of medical equipment. They stated that there was no shortage of medical personnel or equipment during the incident. However, some students have taken to social media to counter the university's official account, accusing the management of failing to provide basic medical care. The incident has sparked online discussions and concerns about the university's response to the situation.
The university's Vice-Chancellor expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and stated that the management remained with the family until the burial. The incident has raised questions about the university's medical response and procedures, which are being addressed by the institution and its stakeholders.
