A dramatic turn of events unfolded in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, just ahead of a highly anticipated wedding. The ceremony, scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 5, 2026, has been called off after the groom and his father found themselves behind bars for drunk driving. This shocking twist came as a result of a massive operation conducted by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), which netted an impressive 45 motorists for driving under the influence on Saturday night, April 4, and into the early hours of Sunday.
According to Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the KZN Department of Transport, other notable individuals caught in the crackdown included a lecturer who boasted about his impressive English skills, a safety manager, two teachers, two nurses, a pharmacist, a chief liaison officer from a local municipality, and a student. The RTI's operation was so thorough that even a wedding on the horizon was affected, with the ceremony being canceled after the groom and his father were taken into custody.
The RTI's efforts were clearly appreciated by MEC Siboniso Duma, who encouraged the authorities to show "no mercy" to those who were arrested for drunk driving. The list of those who failed to pass the RTI's "NenzaniLaEzweni" test, which requires drivers to answer a question in isiZulu, includes the groom and his father, as well as the aforementioned individuals.
