An incident occurred in Gaza on April 6, resulting in the loss of a World Health Organization (WHO) driver's life. Majdi Aslan, 54, was driving a vehicle with international markings along Salah al-Din Road when it came under fire. The vehicle, which was on its way to evacuate patients, was marked with the WHO logo from all sides, according to Raed Aslan, another WHO employee.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their troops identified an unmarked vehicle approaching them and the Yellow Line, posing an immediate threat. In response, they fired warning shots, which the vehicle continued to accelerate toward after. The IDF then responded with additional fire that hit the vehicle, injuring two local Gazan employees of the WHO. However, the WHO Director General, Tedros Ghebreyesu, confirmed that only one staff member, Majdi Aslan, was killed in the incident.
The relevant authorities are investigating the incident, and Aslan's body was transferred to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza. WHO officials have expressed their devastation over Aslan's death, noting that the incident is a tragic reminder of the risks faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones. The incident occurred just six months after a ceasefire was implemented in the region.
