An incident occurred in Indiana, where a 2-year-old Nigerian child, Erik Reichard, was found malnourished and unresponsive at his family home. The child's body was covered in sores and bug bites, and he weighed just 15lbs, which is approximately half the normal weight for his age.
Erik's parents, Trevor Reichard-Hayes and Katherine Carter, had called the police after they had not seen him alive for 14 hours. Despite the efforts of the responding officers, who performed CPR on the living room floor, Erik was pronounced dead at the scene on April 3.
An investigation was launched, and the parents were arrested and charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, and neglect of a dependent. Two other children were removed from the house, and a search warrant was granted to investigate the property.
The police found a disturbing scene, with faeces on the floor, nappies scattered about, and human waste that had built up for days or even weeks. In one of the children's rooms, a small bed was found with pieces of diaper and drywall debris all over the floor.
The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are seeking support from the community during this difficult time. The case highlights the importance of proper care and nutrition for children, and the devastating consequences of neglect.
