In a remarkable turn of events, two young lives were miraculously rescued from the rubble of a collapsed two-storey residential building in Ilorin, Kwara State. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, April 9, 2026, in the Isale area of Ilorin, leaving authorities scrambling to respond to the emergency.
According to Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara Fire Service, the agency received an emergency call at approximately 09:10 hours, reporting a building collapse at Ajegunle Street, off Sabo-Line Isale Area, Ilorin. Upon arrival, firefighters immediately commenced salvage operations, recovering essential belongings from accessible areas of the building. However, it was later revealed that two children, Ahmad (8 years) and Hussainat (10 years), were initially trapped in the debris.
Miraculously, the children were rescued before the arrival of the Fire Service, and they were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. The prompt response of the emergency services undoubtedly saved the lives of the two children, and their rescue is a testament to the bravery and quick thinking of those involved.
The incident has also highlighted the need for regular structural integrity assessments of buildings, particularly those that are old or showing signs of deterioration. In response to the incident, the Kwara State Fire Service recommended that the Disaster Management Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) seal off the collapsed structure and issue a 7-day ultimatum to occupants of an adjacent building found to be structurally unsafe. The NSCDC acted promptly, enforcing the recommendation and ensuring that the residents of the adjacent building were aware of the risks they faced.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, CFS Alabi Muhammed, was personally present at the scene to oversee ongoing operations and ensure effective coordination with relevant agencies. He emphasized that timely intervention can prevent avoidable disasters and save lives, and urged property owners and residents to heed early warning signs such as cracks and weaknesses in their buildings.
