Orphanage Raided in Lagos, Thousands of Naira Lost in Daring Heist

Armed Robbers Strike Church and Orphanage in Lagos, Leaving Trail of Destruction

In a brazen and daring heist, armed robbers stormed a church and orphanage in Lagos, making off with thousands of naira in cash. The incident, which has left authorities scrambling to piece together the events, highlights the growing threat of armed robberies in the city. The Village of Hope Institution, a church and orphanage located in the Westgate suburb, was the target of the attack.

According to Director Richard Chimbetete, the attackers spent nearly an hour ransacking offices across the facility, overpowering security guards and making off with cash from safes and cash boxes. Security guards on duty were overpowered during the incident, with one guard being disarmed and assaulted. The robbers also attacked a second guard conducting perimeter checks, hitting him with an unknown object before moving to the administration offices.

The attackers forced entry into several offices, stealing large sums of money, including 25,000 naira from the director's office, 2,500 naira from human resources, and smaller amounts from finance and social services offices. The total haul is estimated to be in excess of 30,000 naira. A church member who was praying at the time also encountered the attackers, who ordered her to lie on the ground until they finished.

The incident has raised concerns over a growing wave of armed robberies in western Lagos suburbs, including Westgate, Marlborough, and Mabelreign. Authorities believe the suspects were armed with a weapon linked to an earlier attack on police officers. A Zimbabwe Republic Police G3 rifle allegedly used in the robbery was reportedly stolen days earlier during an ambush involving three officers in Mabelreign.

Ward councillor Kudzai Kadzombe has warned residents about a suspected gang believed to be behind multiple armed robberies in the area. The incident has highlighted the need for increased security measures in the city, particularly in areas prone to such attacks. As the investigation into the incident continues, residents are left to wonder if they will be the next target of these brazen thieves.

The impact of this incident will be felt by the community for a long time, leaving many to wonder how such a daring heist could occur in the heart of Lagos. As the authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice, it is clear that the city is facing a growing threat of armed robberies that must be addressed.
