US-Iran Conflict Eases as Two-Week Ceasefire and Hormuz Strait Reopening Agreed
A temporary reprieve in the ongoing US-Iran conflict has been achieved with the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, aimed at reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route. The decision was announced by Donald Trump, who described the agreement as a significant step towards world peace. The ceasefire is set to ease traffic through the strait, which has been largely closed for the past month.
Meanwhile, the US will assist in easing congestion through the strait, through which about a fifth of the world's oil supply passes. The agreement was reached after discussions between Trump and Pakistani leaders Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint, contingent on Iran agreeing to the immediate and safe reopening of the strait.
In addition, Israel has accepted the ceasefire proposal, although it will not apply to ongoing hostilities involving Hezbollah in Lebanon. This position contrasts with Pakistan's view that the ceasefire should include a halt to fighting in Lebanon. The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has welcomed the development and plans to visit the Middle East to support the implementation of the agreement.
As a result, Iran's Supreme National Security Council has confirmed acceptance of the temporary ceasefire and indicated readiness to begin negotiations with the United States in Islamabad. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted for the duration of the ceasefire under Iranian military oversight. The agreement's long-term implications remain uncertain.
