The recent attacks in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have left a trail of destruction and loss of life, particularly in the Anguwan Kububa community. The deceased students, Abel Joro Gershon and Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, were both students of the university. Abel, a 300-level Building student, was shot in the stomach during the Angwan Rukuba attack and died on April 5 at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). Adeyomo, a 500-level Quantity Surveying student, was shot dead on April 1 outside the campus along Bauchi Road. The university management has extended condolences to the families of the deceased students and residents of Angwan Rukuba, where unknown gunmen reportedly killed more than 30 people.
Meanwhile, the university has taken steps to strengthen security on campus. Normal academic activities resumed on Tuesday across the university's campuses, and security agencies have been visiting the institution to assure students and staff of their safety. The Vice-Chancellor commended the response of security agencies, including visits by the Chief of Army Staff and other officials. He noted that the university was never shut down and that no directive was issued for the evacuation of staff or students.
However, the university management has aligned the resumption of examinations with the end of the Easter break, announcing that exams will continue on Monday, April 13, to allow students who travelled to return safely. Prof. Ishaya added that while students were advised to use designated transport arrangements for the Easter break, the uncoordinated arrival of vehicles from various state governments and organisations created unnecessary panic.
As a result, the university is working to restore a sense of normalcy on campus. The incident has raised concerns about campus safety, and the university is taking steps to address these concerns.
