Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau state is pushing back against the backlash he received after a recent visit to a crisis-ridden community in Jos north. The governor's decision to arrive at Angwan Rukuba in an armoured personnel carrier, following a deadly attack that claimed the lives of 28 people, has been met with criticism from those who claim he acted out of fear.
However, Mutfwang insists that his use of the armoured vehicle was purely a matter of security protocol. Speaking in a television interview, he emphasized that his security personnel have a duty to protect him, and in this case, they assessed the situation as potentially hostile. As a result, they took steps to safeguard his safety, not out of personal fear, but out of a sense of duty.
The governor's visit to the community was a result of his swift return to the state after receiving news of the brutal attack while he was in Abuja for official engagements. He recalled that tensions were running high at the scene, with residents refusing to allow the evacuation of the victims' bodies until he arrived. "Unless they see the governor, they are not going to allow those corpses to be evacuated," he said.
Despite the volatile situation, Mutfwang insisted on visiting the scene, despite advice from security operatives to exercise caution.
