Tragedy struck the Ariko community in Kaduna State on Easter Sunday, leaving a trail of devastation and loss of life. At least seven people have been reported dead following a brutal attack on two churches, First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, by suspected terrorists.
According to Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, the attack occurred while the local community was celebrating Easter, a time typically filled with joy and hope. Bawa, who is currently on his way to the affected area to gather more information, confirmed that the attackers were a large group who surrounded the churches and opened fire on the worshippers. Several people lost their lives, and many more were taken away into the nearby bush.
The poor telecommunications coverage in the area may have allowed the attackers to carry out their assault without immediate response, Bawa said. The councillor's words are a stark reminder of the challenges faced by communities in remote areas, where access to emergency services can be limited.
This attack is not an isolated incident, as it follows a similar incident in Jos just a week ago, where over 20 people lost their lives while Christians were celebrating Palm Sunday. The events are a sobering reminder of the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria.
