Tragedy struck on Easter Sunday, April 5, in a devastating incident that will be remembered for years to come. During an Easter egg hunt in a forest in northern Germany, a falling tree claimed the lives of a 21-year-old mother and her 10-month-old daughter. A 16-year-old girl was also caught underneath the massive 100-foot log, which crushed four people at around 11 am.
The woodland was under a storm warning at the time, with winds reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour. Around 50 new mothers, expectant mothers, and staff members from the nearby Sterni-Park residential group, which offers support to young and vulnerable families, were in the woods searching for Easter eggs. Colorful eggs were scattered across the site, adding a surreal touch to the chaotic scene.
Another young woman, aged 18, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, where she underwent surgery. The baby girl was also airlifted to a hospital in Kiel, where she sadly did not survive her life-threatening injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that participants were terrified when they realized a tree had fallen on several people, trapping them. Emergency services, including the fire department and ambulances, responded quickly to the scene, according to German newspaper Bild.
The cause of the tree's fall remains unclear, with some questioning whether it had any pre-existing damage or disease. A spokesman for Sterni-Park expressed the organization's grief, saying
