In a tragic incident that has left the community shaken, three teenage girls from Jambuvalasa village in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitharama Raju district lost their lives while attempting to take selfies at the Mulagummi waterfall in the Ananthagiri hills. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 9, when four girls from the same village went on an outing to the forested location near Visakhapatnam.
As part of their social media video shoot, three of the girls ventured into the shallow part of the water, while the fourth girl filmed them. The video appears to show the girls laughing and having a good time before one of them suddenly ventured slightly farther out and vanished underwater. Her friends moved to the spot where she was in a bid to help her, but they also went under. According to the police, the girls were standing on slippery rocks close to the waterfall when they lost their footing and slipped into the water. Notably, none of the girls knew how to swim, which worsened the situation as they were pulled by the strong current.
Locals rushed to the spot after hearing cries for help and managed to rescue one of the girls, who was later moved to a hospital. However, the other three – identified as Trisha (17), Ratnakumari (16), and Pavitra (16) – could not be saved. Police teams later reached the site and retrieved the bodies. Authorities noted that while the waterfall may appear relatively small, the terrain is extremely slippery and the currents can be deceptively strong, making it hazardous for visitors.
This incident highlights the importance of safety awareness and responsible behavior, particularly among young people who are increasingly drawn to social media and the need for likes and followers. As the world becomes more connected through technology, it is essential to strike a balance between capturing life's moments and being mindful of one's surroundings. In this case, the girls' desire to create a social media video ultimately led to their tragic demise.
The community is in shock following this incident, and the authorities are urging visitors to exercise caution when visiting waterfalls and other natural attractions. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for safety guidelines and education on how to navigate potentially hazardous situations. As the investigation into the incident continues, the focus will shift to ensuring that such tragedies do not occur in the future.
