A major incident has been declared in Derby, UK, where around 200 homes are being evacuated after two men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences. Police said the suspects, aged in their forties and fifties, were detained at a property on Vulcan Street and remain in custody. Officers moved in after receiving intelligence about what they described as materials at the address. Emergency services have since surrounded the area, and residents have been urged to stay away for the next 24 hours. Police are working alongside Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Derby City Council as the situation unfolds. Authorities stressed that the case is not being treated as a terrorism investigation and said there is no wider threat to the public. A cordon has been set up and officers are going door to door to evacuate homes as a precaution while the materials are assessed. Those within the affected zone have been told to prepare to be out of their homes for a full day and to make arrangements for essential medication and pets. Derbyshire Police said the initial rest centre for evacuees is being established at the Salvation Army building on Osmaston Road, operated by Derby City Council. The streets being cleared include Shaftsbury Crescent, Vulcan Street, Reeves Road, Harrington Street from Holcombe Street to Vulcan Street, Baseball Drive to Colombo Street and parts of Cambridge Street. Police reiterated, This is not being investigated as a terrorism incident, there is no wider risk to the community, and the evacuations are a precaution to ensure the safety of those in the area.
