The United States Food and Drug Administration is carrying out a wide ranging investigation into deaths that may be linked to Covid 19 vaccines, a spokesperson for Donald Trumps vaccine skeptical health secretary confirmed late on Tuesday, December 9. The development follows the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health secretary, a move that has triggered a sweeping overhaul of vaccine policy and raised fresh concerns within the medical community. FDA is doing a thorough investigation, across multiple age groups, of deaths potentially related to COVID vaccines, said Andrew Nixon, spokesperson for Kennedys health and human services department, in comments to AFP. Reports by Bloomberg and the Washington Post had earlier disclosed the existence of the probe. The review was initially expected to focus on possible child deaths but became highly controversial after an internal FDA document was leaked in late November. The memo, attributed to a senior FDA official, claimed that Covid vaccines were linked to at least 10 infant deaths, though it provided no supporting evidence for the allegation. Health authorities worldwide have repeatedly stated that the safety and effectiveness of Covid vaccines have been extensively studied and documented. While rare severe side effects have been recorded, experts maintain that these do not outweigh the overall benefits of vaccination for the vast majority of age groups. Nixon declined to give details about the methods being used for the investigation, the data involved, or the timeline for when conclusions might be released. Concerns have also been raised by experts over the FDAs direction under Kennedy, who has a long history of spreading vaccine related misinformation and conspiracy theories.
