As the global fight against illicit drug trafficking continues, a Nigerian national, Stanley Anayo Chukwu Chukwukere, has been handed an eight-year jail term in Malta for attempting to import nearly one kilogramme of cocaine into the island nation. Chukwukere, a 53-year-old with no fixed address, was convicted after pleading guilty to a series of serious drug offences, marking a significant milestone in Malta's efforts to combat organised crime.
The incident occurred on July 2, 2025, when Chukwukere arrived at Malta International Airport on a flight from Brussels. He was carrying only a small bag, but a joint operation by police, customs officers, and airport officials flagged him for further checks. Although his person and belongings were clear, Chukwukere later admitted to swallowing the cocaine pills while at Mater Dei Hospital. Initially, he pleaded not guilty to the charges, but later changed his stance, declaring his guilt on February 23, 2026.
The court took into consideration the serious nature of the offences and the circumstances of the case, including the large quantity of cocaine involved. The estimated street value of the 981.4 grams of cocaine, with an average purity of 87%, was a staggering €57,903. In its reasoning, the court stressed that the punishment must reflect the gravity of organised drug crime, particularly where large quantities are involved.
As a result, Chukwukere was sentenced to eight years effective imprisonment and fined €15,000. He was also required to pay €1,559.39 in expert costs and forfeit his movable and immovable assets.
