Voter Revalidation Plans Hit a Speed Bump: INEC Calls a Halt
The Independent National Electoral Commission has put the brakes on its nationwide voter revalidation exercise, at least for now. The commission had announced plans to update the voter register starting on April 13, 2026, in preparation for the 2027 general elections. RECs (Resident Electoral Commissioners) were instructed to begin preparations, including deploying voter enrollment devices and mobilizing personnel.
The exercise was set to unfold in phases, starting at the local government level and gradually moving to registration areas and polling units. However, INEC has since ordered a halt to all related activities, instructing RECs to step back from publicity and arrangements for the revalidation exercise. They're now waiting for further directives from the commission.
In a further twist, INEC has also shifted its scheduled meeting with RECs from in-person to a virtual session via Zoom. The meeting, originally set for April 9, 2026, will now take place remotely, with RECs advised to stay in their respective states and await login details for the virtual meeting. The commission apologized for any inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to a smooth and credible electoral process.
