Tragedy struck in New York City when a seven-month-old baby girl, Kaori Patterson-Moore, became an innocent victim of a targeted attack. On a typical Wednesday afternoon, Kaori and her two-year-old brother were strolling through East Williamsburg with their parents, Jamari Patterson and Lianna Charles-Moore, when chaos erupted. Gunmen, allegedly linked to a rival housing project, had been involved in a social media feud with Patterson and had come to East Williamsburg with a clear intent to harm him.
According to investigators, two men riding a moped drove the wrong way down Humboldt and Moore Streets at around 1:20pm and opened fire on a group of people, including children and adults. Kaori was tragically struck, and her toddler brother suffered a graze wound to his back. In the midst of the chaos, the family sought refuge in a nearby shop.
Kaori's mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, described the moment of the attack in heartbreaking detail. "We thought it was fireworks, but my son jumped out of the stroller and I picked him up and carried him. I was hugging him and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much." Charles-Moore also shared that Kaori had only recently begun saying "mamma," making the loss all the more devastating.
