Saidu recounts the events of that fateful day, when he was busy selling his garden eggs and chatting with his customers. As the sun began to set around 7:30 pm, he turned to his friend Hassan, who sold sugarcane, to discuss when they should head home. But before they could even make a plan, the sound of gunshots pierced the air, sending everyone scrambling for cover. In the midst of the chaos, a Christian man quickly opened his door and hid Saidu inside, saving him from certain harm.
The Christian man took Saidu to his wife's room, where he was given food and comfort. Saidu was so shaken by the experience that he lost all sense of time, thinking he would be killed.
