A major shake-up has hit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has withdrawn its recognition from both the David Mark-led faction of the party and the faction led by Rafiu Bala. This decision comes on the heels of the Court of Appeal's judgment on March 12 this year, which has left the electoral landscape a bit uncertain.
According to a statement released by the INEC Chairman, Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Kudu, the commission will no longer recognize either faction until the Federal High Court makes a decision on the matter. As a result, INEC will also not be monitoring any meetings, congresses, or conventions of the two groups until the dispute is resolved. Interestingly, the commission has announced plans to remove David Mark's name from its portal, effectively severing ties with the faction led by the former Senate President.
The drama unfolded after Rafiu Bala, the party's former vice chairman, approached the courts to challenge the emergence of David Mark and his colleagues at the National Working Committee. Bala argued that he should have taken over as chairman after the resignation of the Ralph Nwosu-led National Working Committee in July 2025. He instituted Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025 on September 2, 2025, to back up his claim.
